Day 35
It's day 35 on Monhegan Island. Today, like most days, I got up and made my lunch, then walked up the hill to the museum. It wasn't quite as hot today as yesterday, but It was still steamy. I did some more work, then checked to see if there was any interest in the Wildlands Walk. Nobody today, so I ate my lunch (lentil curry over roasted potatoes), and then asked my boss if I could hike for the rest of the day. I wanted to see some trails that I haven't walked on for a month now, and look at how they've changed.
I started out on my classic walk on Trail 7 to Whitehead, then backtracked and took 1A to connect to Long Swamp (12). I merged onto Maple Trail (16) before heading southwest back towards town on Black Head (10). I turned right to head north on Evergreen (15) and took the Cliff Trail (1) to connect over to Pebble Beach Trail (14) before coming back out on Black Head road. I cut back into the forest on Red Ribbon Trail (9), then Alder (6) to Gull Cove (5). I explored the rocks out at Gull Cove, then took the trail back to Horns Hill and went back to the Yew. Overall, I covered nearly the whole north half of the island. I enjoyed wild raspberries, a few blueberries, and two blackberries that are ahead of the crop. I crashed once I got back to the Yew, but then learned that there were plans for a picnic tonight with the crew.
This picnic was not anywhere close, like Cabot Hill or the wreck, it was out at Pulpit Rock, a cliff near the North End of the island. The crew tonight included Jorgie, Olivia, Jess, Amelia, Alex, Charlotte, Miles & India (new friends we met who are staying at their grandparents' summer house for a bit), and Maya and Skylar, who we met out on Black Head Road. We hiked out Black Head Trail (10) to Fern Glen (17) then Station Hill (18). We did a little bit of rock climbing to find the perfect flat rock to set up our picnic on. We feasted on cheese, hummus, carrots, crackers, blueberries, and wild raspberries from right off the trail. Once it started getting dark, we hiked back out, but not before going for a swim down in Deadman's cove. It was my first time swimming there at low tide, and it is much harder to find a spot to get in when the seaweed on the rocks is exposed -- it's quite slippery!
In all today, my phone says that I got over 18,000 steps! I don't know how much to trust it, but I'm impressed with myself nonetheless. I hung out behind the dorms with Miles, India, and Alex and then took a much needed shower. I'm going to sleep so well, I know it.
I'm going to throw a bunch of pictures in here, and I'll caption them each individually.
