Day 45

It's day 45 on Monhegan, and I had the day off! I woke up on the early side this morning and rode down with the truck to the morning boat. I like waking up early on my free days and taking a nap later instead of sleeping way in -- it makes me feel like I'm not wasting my day. Anyway, down at the wharf I helped offload freight from the boat and load it onto the appropriate trucks. Then, I rewarded myself with an oat maple flat white from The Barnacle (thanks Mar!).

I walked back to the Yew and ate some breakfast, then put some laundry in. I went to the store with Jorgie to grab a few things, and put my clothes out on the line. Then, I relaxed in the sun on the picnic benches out on the lawn. I enjoyed a quick lunch/snack of some tinned sardines and crackers, then decided to go out an explore one little road near the church that I had never been on before.

I ended up on a trail that went down to the shore on the south end of the harbor, and walked along the rocks keeping my eyes peeled for treasure. I found some urchins, which surprised me! I knew there used to be a booming urchin fishery here, but it collapsed a while back. Here's the biggest remnant I found:

I walked along the shore for about two hours. I stopped an sat on rocks, watching the seaweed dance in the irregular heartbeat of the waves. I eventually found myself all the way down at Lobster Cove, and walked back to Cabot Hill from the top of the shore where there is a little more of an established trail. Here are a few more photos I took:

Maybe I should be a seaweed scientist!

After my walk, I returned to the Yew and helped Olivia and Jorgie with Dip Night! It's just like it sounds -- many types of dips for dinner! I shaped the pita dough that Olivia was cooking, cooked the sweet potatoes, made a labneh, then worked on plating all of the dips. They were gorgeous, but more importantly -- delicious! Nine dips total, pita, and sweet potatoes:

I went back for seconds and wanted thirds because of how good it all was, but I couldn't eat any more. One perk of cooking is that you don't have to clean up, so I sat on the porch.

We decided to go swimming down at Deadman's Cove to celebrate Jane's last night of the season. Then, I walked back home with Jorgie and Louis and took a shower. Now, I'm laying in bed listening to the hum of insects in my left ear and Janet Jackson in my right. Goodnight!

Love, Me
